The Transactional Touch

THE BELIEF

A sexless relationship means there is no attraction or love left — the relationship is essentially over.

THE DATA

Levine's clinical research shows that desire discrepancy — not absence of love — is the most common driver of low-frequency sexual relationships. Partners often report deep emotional attachment while experiencing mismatched desire levels. The Dual Control Model (Janssen and Bancroft) explains that desire is inhibited by stress, anxiety, and relational conflict through neurobiological pathways that operate independently of attraction or affection.

THE BELIEF

The higher-desire partner is the one with the 'normal' level of sexual interest — the lower-desire partner has a problem that needs fixing.

THE DATA

Laumann's NHSLS data show that sexual frequency and desire vary enormously across the population, with no fixed normal. Nagoski's synthesis of the Dual Control Model explains that both spontaneous and responsive desire are normal human patterns — neither is pathological. Desire discrepancy is a relationship-level phenomenon: it's about the mismatch, not the absolute level of either partner.

THE BELIEF

Couples with infrequent sex are less satisfied in their relationship overall — frequency is a reliable proxy for relationship health.

THE DATA

McNulty and Fisher's longitudinal data show that the relationship between frequency and satisfaction is mediated by attribution: couples who interpret low frequency as situational (stress, life stage, health) show similar satisfaction levels to more sexually active couples. Call, Sprecher, and Schwartz similarly found that subjective meaning, not raw frequency, was the stronger predictor. The data consistently show the association is non-linear — satisfaction does not increase proportionally with frequency above a moderate baseline.
