The research tells a more structural story: jealousy is a threat-appraisal system, not a character flaw. It activates when the relationship is perceived as valuable and a rival is perceived as threatening. What determines whether jealousy destroys or becomes manageable isn't the flash of feeling — it's what happens next. Anxious attachment predicts destructive coping (surveillance, confrontation, withdrawal). Cognitive jealousy — the rumination loop that replays suspicion long after the emotional spike has passed — predicts worse relationship outcomes than the emotional flash itself. Salovey and Rodin's 1985 framework and White and Mullen's threat-appraisal model both converge on the same point: jealousy is information about perceived value and perceived threat. The suffering lives in what you do with that information.
