Self-Discrepancy Reactance
Self-discrepancy reactance is the resistance the mind generates when a statement about the self clashes with an existing self-belief. When someone with low self-esteem hears or says 'I am loveable,' the claim is perceived as discrepant with their actual self-concept, triggering counter-arguments and negative affect rather than acceptance. The stronger the gap between the stated claim and the existing self-belief, the more pronounced the reactance — and the more harm the statement causes.
How it sounds in your head
The inner script: 'My therapist told me to say I'm worthy of love, so I said it — and then spent the next five minutes listing all the reasons it isn't true.' That listing is the mechanism in action: the discrepant claim activated counter-argument, which reinforced the negative self-belief rather than eroding it.
