Rejection sensitivity isn't the same as disliking rejection — everyone dislikes rejection. It's a specific cognitive-affective pattern, defined by Geraldine Downey and Scott Feldman in 1996, in which a person anxiously expects rejection, reads ambiguous signals as confirming it, and then responds in ways — withdrawal, hostility, preemptive distancing — that make real rejection significantly more likely. The brain underlies it in a striking way: Naomi Eisenberger's fMRI work in 2003 showed that social exclusion activates the same dorsal anterior cingulate cortex circuitry as physical pain. The old script — 'I'm just too sensitive, I should be tougher' — misses the mechanism.
