Rejection Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
The rejection self-fulfilling prophecy is the process by which rejection sensitivity generates the very rejections it anticipates. Downey et al.'s 1998 longitudinal study mapped the mechanism: a perceived slight triggers RS-driven hostility or preemptive withdrawal; the partner experiences this as real mistreatment and becomes genuinely less satisfied; satisfaction declines; the relationship ends. Each exit is then incorporated into the RS story — 'see, everyone leaves eventually' — reinforcing the original expectancy without any recognition that the exit was co-produced.
SEE THE PRACTICE
Turn a thought this research explains into one clear move.
THE THOUGHT
“Better to pull back now before I get hurt”
YOUR RECORDED RESPONSE
“Leaving before they reject me trades a maybe for a guaranteed no—and calls it protection.”
ONE PRIVATE MOVE
Locate one task or application you've mentally dismissed as pointless. Spend four minutes outlining a single section of it—not finishing it, just writing what you'd say. Stop. That outline is evidence against the thought.
How it sounds in your head
The inner script: 'I can tell they're losing interest, so I pulled back first — better to leave than to be left.' The research maps what happens next: from the partner's perspective, the unexplained withdrawal is experienced as rejection; they respond with real distance; and the RS reading — 'I knew they would leave' — is confirmed by the very mechanism that produced the leaving.
