Catastrophe model of anxiety and performance
The catastrophe model adds a second dimension to the classic arousal-performance curve: cognitive anxiety, or worry. With low worry, rising arousal boosts then gently reduces performance, the familiar inverted-U. With high worry, the same rising arousal can push performance off a cliff — a sudden, large drop rather than a graceful slide — and recovering afterward requires arousal to fall much further than the point where the collapse began, a pattern called hysteresis.

How it sounds in your head
A free-throw shooter down one point with three seconds left is fine as the crowd noise and stakes climb — until one more notch of pressure, layered on top of heavy worry about missing, sends the whole motion into sudden free-fall: not a slightly worse shot, an airball that stuns even the shooter.
