Rank-anxiety loop
Chronic worry about slipping in rank (status anxiety) predicts lower job satisfaction on its own, and depending on whether it produces benign or malicious envy toward higher-ranked peers, it can sharpen effort or sabotage it — feeding back into the very rank that triggered it (Keshabyan & Day, 2020; 2024 envy-paradox study).
SEE THE PRACTICE
Turn a thought this research explains into one clear move.
THE THOUGHT
“I am my quota attainment”
YOUR RECORDED RESPONSE
“My rank is a snapshot of October outcomes, not a verdict on who I am in November.”
ONE PRIVATE MOVE
Pull up your deal history for the last 30 days. Read through three recent wins—what you discovered, what you solved, what the customer needed. Notice that none of that work disappears or changes based on your current rank position. Do not check the leaderboard while you do this.
How it sounds in your head
A rep who drops from third to seventh on the board starts checking it hourly. If that triggers admiration-driven effort (benign envy) they climb back up; if it triggers resentment (malicious envy) they may withhold help from teammates, dragging their own numbers — and rank — further down.
