The Science of Romantic Jealousy: Why Your Brain Scans for Threats, and Why Ruminating Makes It Worse
"I'm not a jealous person — I just need to know" is one of the most common lies jealousy tells about itself. The research tells a more structural story: jealousy is a threat-appraisal system, not a character flaw. It activates when the relationship is perceived as valuable and a rival is perceived as threatening. What determines whether jealousy destroys or becomes manageable isn't the flash of feeling — it's what happens next. Anxious attachment predicts destructive coping (surveillance, confrontation, withdrawal). Cognitive jealousy — the rumination loop that replays suspicion long after the emotional spike has passed — predicts worse relationship outcomes than the emotional flash itself.
