The Science of Romantic Jealousy: Why Your Brain Scans for Threats, and Why Ruminating Makes It Worse
"I'm not a jealous person — I just need to know" is one of the most common lies jealousy tells about itself. The research tells a more structural story: jealousy is a threat-appraisal system, not a character flaw. It activates when the relationship is perceived as valuable and a rival is perceived as threatening. What determines whether jealousy destroys or becomes manageable isn't the flash of feeling — it's what happens next. Anxious attachment predicts destructive coping (surveillance, confrontation, withdrawal). Cognitive jealousy — the rumination loop that replays suspicion long after the emotional spike has passed — predicts worse relationship outcomes than the emotional flash itself. Salovey and Rodin's 1985 framework and White and Mullen's threat-appraisal model both converge on the same point: jealousy is information about perceived value and perceived threat. The suffering lives in what you do with that information.

Gregory White proposes one of the first formal models of romantic jealousy, framing it as a response to a perceived threat to a valued relationship from a real or imagined rival — establishing jealousy as a relational appraisal process rather than a simple emotion. ↗

Peter Salovey and Judith Rodin publish landmark research distinguishing jealousy (threat to the relationship) from envy (desire for what another has), demonstrating that social comparison processes drive both — and that self-esteem in the threatened domain moderates the intensity of jealous responses. ↗

Pfeiffer and Wong validate the Multidimensional Jealousy Scale, formally separating cognitive jealousy (intrusive thoughts and suspicion-checking), emotional jealousy (the acute affective response), and behavioral jealousy (surveillance, snooping) — demonstrating that cognitive jealousy, not the emotional flash, is the component most predictive of relationship distress. ↗
