Experiments show the pain of exclusion fires so fast and so automatically that it hits even when you're 'excluded' by a computer you're told is scripted. Brain scans put that pain in the same circuitry as physical pain, and a common painkiller can dull it. What we now call FoMO is that same ancient detection system, running against a feed engineered to show you every gathering you missed. Here's how the science mapped it — and why the hurt is real but almost never the verdict it feels like.
How the science changed
- 2000
Williams, Cheung and Choi introduce Cyberball — a rigged online ball-tossing game — and show that being ignored by two strangers for a few minutes measurably lowers belonging, self-esteem, control, and a sense of meaningful existence. ↗
