The FoMO Loop
The FoMO loop is the ancient ostracism alarm running against an infinite feed. Fear of missing out is highest in people whose needs for relatedness, competence, and autonomy are least met — and it spikes not when you're actually excluded, but later in the day, during dull required tasks, when a curated stream of gatherings-without-you is one tap away.
SEE THE PRACTICE
Turn a thought this research explains into one clear move.
THE THOUGHT
“If I log off, I'll miss something”
YOUR RECORDED RESPONSE
“The better version of tonight is not a fact I can verify from my screen.”
ONE PRIVATE MOVE
Put your phone on airplane mode for eight minutes and place it in a different room. When you return, jot down the actual sounds, objects, or conversations that were still here without you checking.
How it sounds in your head
Stuck studying at 10pm, you open the feed and there it is: three people you know, laughing somewhere you weren't asked. The dread that follows isn't news about your friendships — it's boredom plus an unmet need plus a feed built to surface exactly this. Closing the app removes the fuel, not the friendships.
