The Pipeline Poker Face

SURFACE BEHAVIOR

  • Your forecast has two versions: the one in the CRM and the one in your stomach.
  • You read your manager's every one-word reply as a termination letter in draft.
  • A teammate offers to help with a stuck deal and you say “all good” while drowning.

THE HIDDEN RULE

“If they see the real numbers — or hear me ask for help — I'm finished.” Edmondson's research says people hide problems to protect their image, and it backfires twice: the forecast still lands, just later and worse, and the teams that ask for help are the ones that outperform.

INSTALL MECHANISM

Contingent Self-Worth

Contingent self-worth is the pattern, described by Crocker and Wolfe, of staking self-esteem on outcomes in a specific domain — like hitting a sales number — so that success there lifts self-esteem and failure drops it, regardless of a person's stable qualities. Because quota outcomes are shaped by market conditions, territory, and timing as much as effort, anchoring self-worth there ties a person's sense of value to something only partly in their control.

REPLACEMENT PROTOCOL

  • Bad news early is a plan. Bad news late is a resignation.
  • My manager can't coach a pipeline they can't see.
  • Asking for help is how the best reps got good. I'm using the same door.
