Like you're just reading the news. Research on distanced self-talk tells a more actionable story: the way you address yourself in that moment — first person ('I') versus third person ('Alex') — changes how much emotional load the brain treats the thought as carrying, and how effortfully you have to work to regulate it. Shifting from 'I'm terrified' to 'Alex is scared right now' is not a trick. It's a measurable shift in neural processing that bypasses the cognitive control network, lands you in the observer seat rather than the reactor seat, and — because it's so low-effort — is actually more sustainable than deep breathing, reappraisal, or talking yourself out of it.
