Emotional Shopping Loop
The emotional shopping loop is the reinforcement cycle in which negative emotion triggers an impulse to buy, buying produces short-term mood relief (via restored sense of agency), and the relief reinforces the shopping behavior — making it more likely to recur the next time a negative emotion appears. The 2020 Journal of Consumer Psychology review notes that this loop is most likely to escalate in people who rely on shopping as a habitual emotion-regulation strategy, raising risk of compulsive buying.
How it sounds in your head
The inner script: 'I've had a terrible day — I deserve to treat myself.' The research reads it differently: the relief is real but brief, and the loop is reinforcing itself each time you use a purchase to escape a feeling. The next bad day, the pull toward the cart is a little stronger.
