Agency Restoration Effect

The agency restoration effect is the mechanism by which making a purchase decision temporarily repairs negative mood, not through the item acquired but through the act of choosing. Atalay and Meloy's experiments found that negative emotions erode a person's sense of control over their environment, and the deliberate act of selecting and buying something restores that sense of agency — which is why the relief is real but brief, and why browsing without buying produces less mood repair than an actual purchase decision.

How it sounds in your head

The inner script: 'I just needed to get something for myself — now I feel a bit better.' The research identifies why: you made a decision, and that decision restored a sense of control the bad mood had taken away. The item matters less than the act. Which is also why the feeling fades so quickly — and why the pull to buy comes back.
