Seventy years of research tell a different story: pressure consumes the working memory that exams demand, and it hits the most capable students hardest; procrastination is emotion regulation, not time management; and beliefs about whether ability can grow predict whose grades rise after a setback. Here's how the science changed, and where the old scripts came from.

How the science changed

  1. 1952

    Mandler and Sarason publish 'A Study of Anxiety and Learning' in the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology, introducing the Test Anxiety Questionnaire and showing that anxiety in testing situations is a measurable determinant of test performance — the founding paper of test-anxiety research.

  2. 1988

    Hembree's meta-analysis of 562 studies in Review of Educational Research establishes that test anxiety reliably lowers performance across grade levels — and that it is treatable, with treated students' scores rising toward those of low-anxious peers.

  3. 2005

    Beilock and Carr publish 'When High-Powered People Fail' in Psychological Science: performance pressure hurt only the students with the highest working memory capacity, and only on the math problems that demanded the most of it — choking is working-memory theft, not weak nerves.

  4. 2007

    Steel's meta-analysis of 691 correlations in Psychological Bulletin maps procrastination's real predictors — task aversiveness, delay, self-efficacy and impulsiveness — and reports that 80-95% of college students procrastinate, with almost 50% doing so consistently and problematically.

    Blackwell, Trzesniewski and Dweck show in Child Development that seventh graders who believed intelligence is malleable had rising math grades over two years while 'fixed intelligence' believers stayed flat — and a brief intervention teaching the malleable view reversed a declining trajectory.
