Choking under pressure
Choking under pressure is performing worse than your skill level precisely when performance matters most. The mechanism is working-memory theft: worries about the situation and its consequences occupy the same limited cognitive workspace that demanding tasks — like multi-step exam problems — require, so the resource your preparation depends on is spent on the worry instead. In Beilock and Carr's experiments, pressure harmed only the students with the highest working memory capacity, and only on the most demanding problems.

How it sounds in your head
Mid-exam, the script 'if I fail this, everything falls apart' starts looping. That sentence runs in verbal working memory — the same workspace the algebra step needed — so the solution you rehearsed yesterday won't load, which the script then reads as proof you never knew it.
