Decades of behavioral research converge on a different reading: procrastination is emotion regulation. When a task triggers anxiety, boredom, self-doubt, or resentment, the brain reaches for relief rather than productivity — and avoidance reliably delivers short-term relief. Future consequences feel less real than present discomfort (Steel's Temporal Motivation Theory), so the cost seems small, right up until the deadline. Gollwitzer's meta-analytic work on implementation intentions — 'I will do X at time Y in place Z' — shows that a concrete plan can bridge the gap between good intentions and actual action with an effect size (d = 0.65) that places it among the most effective self-regulation tools available. This is not a character story; it's a sequence of tractable psychological events.
