How the science changed

  1. 1913

    French agricultural engineer Max Ringelmann has men pull on a rope alone and in groups of up to eight, finding that per-person force drops as group size grows — 8-person groups pull at only about 49% of summed individual capacity. Rediscovered and translated in 1986 by Kravitz and Martin.

  2. 1979

    Latané, Williams and Harkins formally name 'social loafing' after having people clap and shout alone and in groups: individual sound output per person drops steadily as group size increases, even when coordination loss is controlled for — motivation, not just mechanics, is doing the work.

  3. 1981

    Albert Carron publishes 'The Dynamics of Group Cohesion in Sport,' proposing that cohesion is multidimensional — splitting into task cohesion (unity around shared goals) and social cohesion (liking each other) — rather than one single quality a team either has or lacks.
