Cohesion–Performance Link
The cohesion–performance link is the measurable, moderate-to-large relationship between how cohesive a sport team is and how well it performs, confirmed by pooling 46 studies and 164 effect sizes. Because cohesion itself splits into task cohesion (unity around shared goals) and social cohesion (interpersonal liking), a team can be strong on one and weak on the other while the performance-relevant dimension — task cohesion — still holds up.
SEE THE PRACTICE
Turn a thought this research explains into one clear move.
THE THOUGHT
“I'm on the team but not in the group”
YOUR RECORDED RESPONSE
“I can be counted on here without being in every side conversation.”
ONE PRIVATE MOVE
On a blank note or scrap of paper, draw two short headings: “Work I did” and “Meaning I gave it.” Spend five quiet minutes filling each with fragments from one recent practice or game, then fold or delete it.
How it sounds in your head
The inner script: 'We're not friends off the field, so we'll never really click as a team.' The research separates the two: task cohesion — pulling together on shared objectives — is the dimension most consistently tied to performance, and it doesn't require everyone to be close socially.
