Three decades of sport psychology research tell a more useful story — how strongly and exclusively an athlete's identity is tied to their sport predicts how they cope with injury and retirement, psychological readiness to return is a separate, measurable thing from physical healing, and hiding symptoms is a common, understandable response to identity threat rather than a sign of toughness.     Brewer, Van Raalte and Linder publish 'Athletic Identity: Hercules' Muscles or Achilles Heel?' and introduce the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS), giving researchers a way to measure how strongly and exclusively someone identifies as an athlete.

    Lavallee, Gordon and Grove publish 'Retirement from Sport and the Loss of Athletic Identity', documenting elite athletes who experienced severe emotional difficulty when their careers ended and their sense of self went with it.

  3. 1998

    Wiese-Bjornstal, Smith, Shaffer and Morrey publish the integrated model of psychological response to sport injury: cognitive appraisal of the injury — shaped by personal and situational factors — drives emotional and behavioral responses in an ongoing, reciprocal loop that shapes recovery.

  4. 2007

    Lavallee and Robinson's qualitative study of retired gymnasts finds that adopting an identity based solely on the athlete role early in life leaves people feeling lost and having to rebuild a self apart from the sport once it ends.

    Ardern and colleagues find that psychological factors — motivation during rehab, confidence and satisfaction with knee function — predict whether athletes return to their pre-injury level of sport a year after ACL reconstruction, independent of physical measures.

    Park, Lavallee and Tod's systematic review of 126 studies on athletic career transition finds that athletes with a strong, exclusive athletic identity are especially prone to emotional and psychological difficulty when their careers end.
