Social Pain Neural Overlap
Social pain neural overlap is the finding that the brain regions recruited by physical pain — specifically the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, which signals pain's distress component — are also activated by social exclusion. Eisenberger, Lieberman and Williams demonstrated this in 2003 using fMRI during a Cyberball exclusion paradigm. The overlap is not metaphorical: when someone says rejection 'hurts', they are describing a signal running through the same hardware as a physical injury signal, which is why instructions to 'just get over it' face the same uphill climb as ignoring physical pain.
