The Legacy Weight

THE HIDDEN RULE

I carry their survival as my personal obligation. Postmemory - the weight of ancestors' traumatic past transmitted as if it were my own memory - becomes a script: 'I have to achieve enough to justify what they endured.' Psychological research on second-generation survivors shows that perceived transmission of parental burden significantly predicts offspring distress. The script moves from 'they survived' to 'I owe them a life worth their sacrifice' to 'my problems don't count as real problems next to theirs.' Rest becomes guilt. Happiness becomes disloyalty. Your smallness, your struggle, your ordinary exhaustion - all feel like a betrayal of the weight they carried.
