Vicarious Group Threat
Vicarious group threat is the mechanism by which a member of a historically targeted minority group experiences violence or persecution directed at other group members — anywhere in the world — as a personal safety threat. Fuhr's (2016) sociological research with British Jews showed that antisemitic events abroad produced genuine anxiety and hypervigilance in community members who had no direct exposure to the events, mediated by a sense of shared vulnerability rooted in group identification and historical memory. Minority stress theory frames this as a proximal stressor: the internalized expectation that 'what happened to them could happen to me' generates chronic background vigilance independent of whether a threat is objectively present.
How it sounds in your head
The inner script — triggered the morning after a violent antisemitic incident on another continent: 'Is my mezuzah visible from the street? Should I take off my Star of David? I need to figure out the exit routes from this neighborhood.' The threat-calculation runs automatically, powered by group identification, not by any information about personal risk.
