The Science of Burnout
"I'm just tired" and "I should be able to push through" are the two sentences that keep burned-out people burned out.
Occupational science tells a more structural story: burnout is a three-dimensional collapse — exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced efficacy — that develops when work demands drain your resources faster than recovery replenishes them. Maslach's 40-year research program and Hobfoll's Conservation of Resources theory converge on the same point: this isn't about who's resilient enough. It's about a system that's running a deficit.
