The prospecting avoidance loop

The prospecting avoidance loop describes how fear of rejection and low sales confidence reinforce each other over time. Fear leads to avoiding or delaying prospecting; avoidance means fewer real calls to build skill and self-efficacy on; low self-efficacy makes the next call feel riskier still, since research shows sales self-efficacy shapes performance both directly and through the effort a person is willing to put in. Each skipped call feels like relief in the moment and confirmation of the fear in the long run.

SEE THE PRACTICE

Turn a thought this research explains into one clear move.

THE THOUGHT

If they say no, they're rejecting me

YOUR RECORDED RESPONSE

They said no to the offer; they did not get a full picture of me.

ONE PRIVATE MOVE

Open a blank note and list three recent refusals or pushbacks in two columns: what was declined, and what you made it mean about you. Circle any meaning that came from your fear, then close the note and leave it unsent.

How it sounds in your head

After a rough call, a rep pushes tomorrow's prospecting block to 'when I feel more ready.' A week passes with almost no new calls; the pipeline dries up, confidence drops further, and the next attempt feels even harder to start — not because the rep lacks skill, but because the loop has been left to run.
