Attentional control hijacked by threat
Attentional control theory holds that anxiety impairs two working-memory functions athletes rely on: inhibition, which blocks irrelevant distractions, and shifting, which flexibly redirects focus between tasks. Anxiety also biases attention toward threat-related cues — a scoreboard, an opponent's reaction, a coach's face — pulling focus away from execution. The result is reduced processing efficiency: performers often compensate with extra mental effort, so the final result can look fine even while the underlying process is far more strained.
