Researchers who study 'electronic intrusion' and partner surveillance have spent over a decade tracking what actually happens when people check a partner's phone, social feed, or status indicator: the checking tracks the checker's own attachment anxiety far more than it tracks anything the partner is doing, and it correlates with more jealousy and less trust, not less. Here's what the data says about the loop.

    Mikulincer and Shaver formalize attachment theory's 'hyperactivating strategies': when anxiously attached people sense a partner might be unavailable, they respond with vigilance, protest, and intensified monitoring for reassurance — a pattern later observed almost unchanged inside status indicators and messaging apps.

    Elphinston and Noller publish the first validated measure of 'Facebook intrusion' — obsessive checking of a partner's page — and find it predicts jealous cognitions and lower relationship satisfaction, not reassurance.

    Hall and Baym show that higher expectations for constant mobile contact with a partner predict more overdependence and a feeling of entrapment, which in turn predicts lower relationship satisfaction — more checking-in is not simply more caring.
