Family science tells a less dramatic, more useful story: in-law friction is one of the most well-documented, structurally predictable frictions in family life — driven by mismatched perceptions between spouses, two people competing for the same place in one family, and (going back further than either of you) a basic asymmetry in whose genes are whose. None of that makes the sting less real. It does mean the old script — 'someone here is the villain' — is usually the wrong read.
