The Feed Script

SURFACE BEHAVIOR

  • You unlock the phone with no memory of deciding to.
  • “Five minutes” routinely eats an hour and leaves you emptier.
  • The scroll happens most at the exact moments your life needs you.

THE HIDDEN RULE

“Five more minutes costs nothing, and I might miss something.” The feed sells connection and delivers sedation — engineered to never reach a stopping point.

INSTALL MECHANISM

Variable-Reward Checking

Variable-reward checking is the compulsive habit of repeatedly checking a phone, feed, or inbox because rewards — a message, a like, interesting content — arrive on an unpredictable schedule. B. F. Skinner's research established that variable-ratio reinforcement (reward after an unpredictable number of responses) produces the highest and most extinction-resistant response rates of any reinforcement schedule. Notification and feed systems are structurally designed to operate on this schedule, making compulsive checking a predictable output of the design, not a personal failing.

REPLACEMENT PROTOCOL

  • Nothing in the feed is about my life. Everything I'm avoiding is.
  • I wasn't missing anything. I was missing from something.
  • Bored is the feeling right before I do something real.
