The Wasting Script

THREAT ASSESSMENT

'I'm costing them their best years.' This is self-sacrificial framing — and it also functions as a push-away mechanism. The older partner casts themselves as a debt the younger partner is unknowingly running up, converting their own guilt into a story about harm. What it doesn't do: ask the younger partner what they actually think they're gaining. The wasting frame assumes they're passive recipients of your life rather than adults who chose it.

KNOWN SIGNATURES

  • You catch yourself calculating what they're giving up — without ever asking them.
  • Your guilt about the age gap appears as concern for them, but lands as distance.
  • You've mentally written a breakup speech for their own good that they never asked for.

COUNTERMEASURES

  • They chose this. Repeatedly. My guilt isn't the same as their experience.
  • Deciding for them what they're losing is not care — it's control dressed as sacrifice.
  • I ask, I don't assume. One conversation beats a hundred imagined ones.
