The Default Parent Pattern

The 'default parent' is whichever partner is the household's first point of contact for a domain — the one the school calls, the one who knows the pediatrician's number, the one whose day reorganizes when a kid is sick. Weeks and Ruppanner's 2024 typology found this splits along task type: mothers disproportionately hold the daily 'core' cognitive tasks, fathers cluster in less frequent 'episodic' ones like finances — a structural pattern the data can quantify, not a verdict on either parent's competence.

SEE THE PRACTICE

Turn a thought this research explains into one clear move.

THE THOUGHT

I feel like their parent, not their partner

YOUR RECORDED RESPONSE

I own one full area and don't supervise how it gets done.

ONE PRIVATE MOVE

Write down one domain (appointments, school comms, activities) and text your partner: 'This is yours from now on' without explaining the system you've been using. Don't check for two weeks.

How it sounds in your head

The inner script: 'I'm just naturally more on top of things than he is.' The typology says otherwise: he's not less capable of the daily 'core' tasks — the household simply routed them to her, and routed finances and repairs to him instead.
