For many people it is — but research on rumination draws a sharp line between two very different kinds of going over the past. Brooding — passively replaying events against a standard you haven't met — is one of the most robust predictors of depressed mood onset, duration, and relapse in the literature. Reflective pondering — deliberately working through why something happened in order to understand and adapt — is associated with much smaller risks. The distinction matters because the two feel almost identical from the inside, and because one of the most common responses to feeling low is to do more of the thing that prolongs it.

How the science changed

    Susan Nolen-Hoeksema proposes the response styles theory of depression: individuals who respond to depressed mood by ruminating — passively focusing on symptoms, causes, and consequences — will have longer and more severe episodes than those who distract or take action. The theory reframes depression maintenance as a behavioral, not just a chemical, problem.

    Nolen-Hoeksema and Morrow provide the first prospective test of response styles theory: students assessed before the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake who were ruminators at baseline showed significantly longer depressive symptoms in the weeks after the disaster, even after controlling for baseline mood — establishing that rumination predicts, not just correlates with, prolonged depression.

    Nolen-Hoeksema publishes a large-scale community study of 1,132 adults showing that ruminators are more likely to develop clinical depression and anxiety over a one-year period, and that this effect holds across age, gender, and initial symptom severity — extending response styles theory from lab experiments to real-world onset.

  4. 2003

    Treynor, Gonzalez and Nolen-Hoeksema publish a psychometric analysis of the Ruminative Responses Scale and identify two distinct factors: brooding (passive comparison of the current situation against an unreached standard) and reflective pondering (deliberate, problem-oriented reflection). Only brooding consistently predicts current and future depressive symptoms; reflective pondering shows much weaker, sometimes even protective, associations.
