Breakup Rumination
Breakup rumination is the repetitive replaying of the ended relationship — what went wrong, what it means about you, what you should have done. The research splits it in two: brooding (passive, self-blaming loops) and regret predict worse post-breakup adjustment, while deliberate reflection is associated with better adjustment. In Saffrey and Ehrenberg's study of young adults, dwelling fully accounted for the link between attachment anxiety and poor adjustment.
How it sounds in your head
Replaying the final argument for the fortieth time at 2 a.m. feels like analysis, but it's brooding: the question never changes and no answer is accepted. Deliberate reflection — asking once, in daylight, what you'd actually want next time — is the version the data links to recovery.
