Clinical research documents that purity movement messaging spread sexual double standards, a mind-body split, and female objectification — resulting in physical, emotional, and sexual dysfunction in many survivors, extending into married life.

THE BELIEF

“Virginity pledges successfully reduce risky sexual behavior.”

THE DATA

A 2005 study in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that pledgers had the same STI rates as non-pledgers by ages 18–24. Although pledges delayed first intercourse, pledgers were less likely to use condoms when they did have sex — a combination that produced equivalent disease burden.

THE BELIEF

“Sexual shame from purity culture fades naturally after marriage.”

THE DATA

Research on purity culture tropes and marital sex finds that purity culture exposure is associated with lower marital sexual satisfaction and higher rates of sexual pain conditions including vaginismus — the shame script does not automatically switch off at a wedding ceremony.
