The Marriage Performance Switch

The marriage performance switch is the psychological difficulty that arises when purity culture survivors attempt to transition from years of shame-based sexual suppression to the expectation of healthy, pleasurable married sex. Purity culture trains the nervous system to treat arousal as danger, to suppress sexual thoughts as sinful, and to link the body to moral contamination — and then marriage is presented as the moment all of that flips off. Research documents it does not simply flip off: the same teachings that created the shame script before marriage produce measurable sexual dysfunction, lower satisfaction, and pain conditions including vaginismus after marriage.
