SURFACE BEHAVIOR

  • Your annoyance has a spokesperson, and it's never you to her face.
  • 'I'm fine!' arrives with an exclamation point that means the opposite.
  • You go quieter and quieter and call it 'not making a thing of it'.

THE HIDDEN RULE

“Saying it directly would be mean — so route it through distance, tone, and a third friend.” Indirect conflict feels kinder and lands crueler: the target gets the cold without the chance to fix anything.

INSTALL MECHANISM

Relational aggression

Relational aggression is intentional harm delivered through relationships rather than fists or insults: excluding someone, spreading rumors, threatening to withdraw friendship, or turning others against them. Named by Crick and Grotpeter in 1995, it is real aggression by definition and by outcome — its targets show more rejection, loneliness and depression — and research from college samples to a study of 1,387 adults shows it continues well past the schoolyard.

REPLACEMENT PROTOCOL

  • Direct isn't mean. Vague is mean — it just takes longer.
  • I say it to her before I say it about her.
  • One clear sentence now beats six weeks of weather.
