The Respect Wait
THREAT ASSESSMENT
“My team doesn’t respect me yet — I need to earn it before I can act with authority.” The Respect Wait turns a real dynamic (trust is built over time) into a holding pattern that lasts indefinitely. HBR research on new-manager transitions shows the leaders who wait for permission to lead almost never get it: respect is generated by consistent, decisive action — not by deferring until someone grants it. Watkins (2003) called this the 90-day trap: the window when you can establish authority is also the window you’re most tempted to stay passive.
KNOWN SIGNATURES
- ▸You defer to team consensus on decisions that are clearly yours to make.
- ▸You frame every directive as a suggestion so it feels collaborative.
- ▸You read silence in a meeting as evidence they don’t take you seriously.

COUNTERMEASURES
- Respect doesn’t arrive before authority. It follows consistent action. I go first.
- Asking for a vote on every decision isn’t collaboration — it’s using the team as a shield.
- The 90-day window is open now. Passivity doesn’t preserve it — it wastes it.
