The Credibility Trap

"He's been here fifteen years. Everyone loves him. HR is his friend. If I report this, I'm the one who gets managed out." This is institutional betrayal (Freyd 2011) internalised as prediction: when an organisation protects power over people, the target's brain correctly models the system — and then uses that model to stay silent. The trap closes when the prediction of betrayal replaces the decision to use official channels.

RECOGNITION SIGNS

  1. 01

You've already had the reporting conversation in your head, scripted the bad outcome, and decided not to go.

  2. 02

You find yourself defending the institution to yourself: 'It's probably not that bad, they'd probably be fair.'

  3. 03

Every person you'd report to seems like his ally — so the circle of safe options is down to zero.
