Baumeister et al. 2001 document that negativity bias systematically distorts judgment: bad information receives disproportionate cognitive weight relative to equally valid good information. A founder's insider access doesn't make them immune — it means they also have insider access to every bad signal, which the brain processes more deeply than the good ones.

“Entrepreneurs who struggle mentally are probably not cut out for the job — successful founders have tougher psychology.”

THE DATA

Freeman et al. 2019 found roughly 49 % of surveyed entrepreneurs self-reported a lifetime mental health condition — rates significantly higher than comparison groups. The elevated prevalence spans depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. Struggling mentally is not a disqualifier; it may be part of the same trait profile that drives the risk tolerance and intensity that entrepreneurship requires.

THE DATA

Cardon and Kirk 2015 show that entrepreneurial passion predicts both higher performance and higher emotional volatility — the same intensity is doing both jobs. The research doesn't suggest caring less; it points toward regulating the signal rather than turning off the antenna. The doom read is an output of passion plus negativity bias, not proof that the business is actually dying.
