Festinger's 1954 theory describes social comparison as a fundamental human drive to evaluate opinions and abilities — not a learned vice. The mechanism is automatic and occurs even without social media. The goal isn't to eliminate comparison but to notice which direction and which domain the comparison is running in.

“Seeing someone do better than you is always discouraging.”

THE DATA

Buunk and Gibbons's 2007 review distinguishes assimilation from contrast: upward comparisons inspire when the target feels attainable ('I could get there') and deflate when they feel unreachable ('I'll never be that'). The same Instagram post can lift one person and flatten another depending on how achievable the standard looks to each viewer.

“Comparing yourself to someone who's worse off is petty and unhelpful.”

THE DATA

Wills's 1981 downward comparison theory documents that comparing with worse-off others is a normal, documented self-protection response to threatened self-esteem. It isn't inherently cruel — it's a recognized coping mechanism. The relevant question is whether it's being used to stabilize, or to avoid growth.
