The Sin-Framing Script
The sin-framing script is the internalized cognitive framework — acquired through religious education and often running automatically in adulthood without conscious religious belief — that interprets normal human imperfection, mistake, and moral ambiguity through the lens of sinfulness and divine judgment. It converts ordinary self-critical thoughts ('I made a mistake', 'I was selfish') into the heavier register of unworthiness before God. Research shows this script outlasts active religious practice: people who no longer attend services or identify as Catholic continue to experience the sin/unworthiness pattern because it was encoded early as an automatic appraisal system, not a consciously held belief.
How it sounds in your head
The inner script: 'I haven't been to Mass in fifteen years and I don't really believe anymore, but whenever I make a mistake at work I still feel like God is watching and judging me — like I've done something fundamentally wrong as a person, not just made an error.' The sin-frame is running; it doesn't need active belief to operate.
