Self-Control Depletion → Craving Bridge

The self-control depletion–craving bridge describes how a stressed, regulatory-resource-depleted state activates not just behavioral susceptibility but the specific cognitive permission-giving that converts susceptibility into craving. Baumeister's depletion model established the resource constraint; the 2025 chain-mediation study established that the bridge from depletion to craving runs through self-exempting beliefs — not directly through nicotine withdrawal alone.

How it sounds in your head

The inner script: 'I've held it together all day — I deserve this.' The research reads the first half as accurate (self-control was genuinely depleted) and the second half as the bridge mechanism: 'I deserve this' is the exemption cognition doing the cognitive work of converting a depleted regulatory state into a craving.
