The Ideal-Worker Double Bind

A structural bind produced by workplace cultures built around an unencumbered 'ideal worker' with no caregiving duties: visible accommodation for a child reads as low commitment, and visible workplace commitment reads as bad parenting — with no version of the same behavior satisfying both.

SEE THE PRACTICE

Turn a thought this research explains into one clear move.

THE THOUGHT

I’m a bad parent for wanting to work

YOUR RECORDED RESPONSE

The bind is structural—two roles, two measures, one person. The bind is real; the verdict it delivers on me is not.

ONE PRIVATE MOVE

In the next work interaction where a childcare moment intrudes, notice if you add an apology or explanation you weren't asked for. Write it, then delete it before sending. Observe what that sentence was doing: confessing or protecting?

How it sounds in your head

Leaving at 5:30 for daycare pickup gets read by a manager as 'not hungry enough for the promotion'; staying until 7:00 to finish the deck gets read at home as 'missing bedtime again' — the same person, the same week, failing two different tests at once.
