Executive Loneliness Loop
The executive loneliness loop is a self-reinforcing cycle in which the structural features of leadership roles — authority gradients, information asymmetry, and performance expectations — produce social isolation, which then intensifies the invulnerability performance leaders use to manage it, which further reduces the authentic peer connection that would break the loop. Research on CEO loneliness identifies this as a predictable occupational hazard of the role, not a character flaw, and finds that the standard coping strategy of further isolation compounds rather than relieves it.
SEE THE PRACTICE
Turn a thought this research explains into one clear move.
THE THOUGHT
“Everyone is watching for me to slip”
YOUR RECORDED RESPONSE
“They're not waiting for me to slip—they're waiting to know what happens next.”
ONE PRIVATE MOVE
Identify one piece of information you've delayed sharing or softened before a meeting. Write the unfiltered version in a private document. Notice what you were protecting, and what it actually cost.
How it sounds in your head
The inner script: 'I can't tell my team I'm struggling — they need to see I have this handled.' The research reads it differently: the performance of having it handled is precisely what prevents the peer candor and mentoring connection that would actually help. The armor is the loop.
