Continuing Bonds

Continuing bonds are the ongoing inner relationship bereaved people maintain with someone who died — through memories, conversations, rituals, kept objects, or a felt sense of presence. Research since 1996 shows these bonds are common across cultures and typically part of healthy adaptation, replacing the older view that grief must end in detachment.

How it sounds in your head

The inner script: 'I still talk to my mother when I make her recipe — I must not have accepted that she's gone.' The research reads the same behavior the opposite way: a maintained bond that coexists with fully knowing the person died.
