Growth-Belief Maintenance Effect

The growth-belief maintenance effect is the pattern by which holding a growth belief — 'relationships require work and improve through it' — sustains investment and problem-solving behavior under relational stress, producing higher long-run relationship quality than destiny beliefs. Knee's foundational work found growth believers maintained engagement through difficulty; subsequent research extended this to sexual satisfaction (Bell & McNulty, 2021), showing the effect persists across relationship domains over time.

THE THOUGHT

If it were right, it wouldn't be this hard

YOUR RECORDED RESPONSE

Doubt can show up without being the final word.

ONE PRIVATE MOVE

On a note or in your phone, list three ordinary relationship moments from the past month that took effort and still went fine. Add one word beside each: meal, plan, repair, patience, or compromise.

How it sounds in your head

The inner script: 'This is really hard right now. Maybe we just aren't compatible.' The growth-belief reframe: difficulty is the ordinary material of a relationship developing, not a signal to exit — the same friction that a destiny believer reads as incompatibility evidence, a growth believer reads as the territory where the relationship actually gets built.
