Contempt Cascade

The contempt cascade describes how the Four Horsemen typically appear in sequence: criticism (attacking character, not behavior) invites defensiveness; repeated defensiveness escalates to contempt (moral superiority signals); contempt triggers stonewalling (physiological flooding and shutdown). Gottman's longitudinal data show this cascade — especially sustained contempt — predicts marital dissolution more accurately than any single negative emotion.

THE THOUGHT

They always do this

YOUR RECORDED RESPONSE

This is one frustrating incident, not the whole person.

ONE PRIVATE MOVE

In a private note, write three columns: what happened, what you assumed, and the exact fixable issue. Keep each line to one sentence and stop at ten lines total.

How it sounds in your head

The inner script: 'Every time I try to explain my side, they roll their eyes — they think I'm stupid.' That eye-roll is contempt's calling card, and the script it fires off — 'I'm not worth being heard' or 'They're hopeless' — is the cascade already running. The research says the signal to watch isn't the argument's topic, it's whether either person is communicating 'I'm above you.'
