The science of sports performance anxiety: why the pressure that should help you can make you choke
Your brain runs a script: nerves mean you're not ready, pressure always makes it worse, and choking proves you don't have what it takes. Over a century of research says the truth is stranger and more useful: a little arousal sharpens performance, elite athletes get just as nervous as everyone else, and the players most likely to choke are often the most skilled — because pressure makes them think about a movement their body already knows how to do without thinking. - 1908
Robert Yerkes and John Dodson describe an inverted-U relationship between arousal and performance in mice: moderate arousal speeds learning, while too little or too much impairs it — the foundational law behind every 'nerves help up to a point' claim in sport. ↗

Lew Hardy proposes the catastrophe model of anxiety and performance: when cognitive anxiety (worry) is low, arousal and performance follow the gentle inverted-U, but when cognitive anxiety is high, rising arousal can trigger a sudden collapse rather than a graceful decline. ↗

Sian Beilock and Thomas Carr show golfers putting under pressure while explicitly monitoring their stroke perform worse the more skilled they are — 'explicit monitoring theory' names why conscious step-by-step control breaks down a movement usually run on autopilot. ↗
