The Science of If-Then Plans: Why Deciding When and Where Beats Deciding to Try
"I'll work on it when I feel ready" is one of the most common self-sabotage scripts in goal pursuit — it ties action to an internal state that may never arrive. Psychologist Peter Gollwitzer identified the fix in the 1990s: the implementation intention, a specific if-then plan that links a situational cue ('when situation X occurs') to a pre-decided response ('I will do Y'). A meta-analysis of 94 studies found that people who form these plans are dramatically more likely to follow through, with an effect size of d = 0.65 — one of the largest reliable effects in social psychology. The science reframes the waiting feeling not as a genuine readiness signal but as the absence of a concrete plan: once you've specified the trigger and the action, the brain's cue-detection does most of the motivational work for you.
